Movies

                                       Alien and Prometheus

My opinion on horror films- As soon as I hear the word horror, I automatically think of blood and death. Why? Because all horror films from hundreds of years ago, including the first ones ever made (Le Manoir du Diable & The House of the Devil) have something to do with dying or gore in them. Horror films these days are a lot more scarier than what they used to be. Back in the day when they had silent movies, they never had the equipment to make soundtracks to make the film seem more terrifying than what it actually was. These days, its the music and sound effects that make it feel like a proper horror movie.

Both of these films have the same genre which is obviously horror. Whilst watching them both, I realized how similar yet different they are in a so many ways. As we know, Prometheus is the prequel to Alien so they are supposed to be alike. Plus, they are both directed by the same director. Sir Ridley Scott.

Alien- My class watched Alien first and you could tell straight away that it was a horror/sci-fi movie. The film included plenty of
blood, gore and deaths. Not to mention, it had the scariest looking creature
with massive sharp teeth in it. It wasn't the nicest looking thing I've ever seen before. Throughout the whole film, it had a very eerie sound-track playing in
the background which was slow at certain points to create more tension for
the audience. The code of Alien is the background music and the convention is the blood and gore etc.

Story behind Alien- The crew of the deep space towing vessel Nostromo go and investigate a strange signal from a nearby planet. While investigating the signal, they discover it was intended as a warning, and not an SOS.  As the movie goes on, more crew members die and then in the end there's one woman left. Ripley (The last woman standing) escapes the spaceship which holds the killer Alien just to find its actually in the space shuttle on the way back to Earth with her.

Prometheus- Since Prometheus is the prequel to Alien, we know its definitely going to be like it a lot like Alien. Prometheus was made in 2012 whereas Alien was made in 1979 which makes the film look very dated. Prometheus in general was better than Alien because of the technology you can use these days. When Alien was made they had less technology so the film didn't look as good as Prometheus.

Story behind Prometheus- The story behind Prometheus was to basically try and find out if there was intervention in the birth of civilisation on planet Earth by other beings. Then we come to know them as Engineers and whether they had a master plan in mind for them or not. Prometheus was more or less looking back on things rather than forward. They wanted to find out who made us and where we originally came from.

Some examples of comparisons of style and content in the two films-

OutfitsThe spacesuits in Alien are rough and old looking. They look awfully worn out and If I had to wear one, I don't think it would be very protective. However the spacesuits in Prometheus are far too perfect to look like they're older than the ones in Alien.

The cockpit: As you can see the cockpit in Alien is a lot more colourful because of the colours of the many different buttons ad lights. Whereas the cockpit in Prometheus is very dull and uninspired.

The Spaceship- Nostromo and Prometheus are two different spaceships, with two different purposes. The spaceship Nostromo (Alien) is set in the darkness which creates a spooky feel. On the other hand you have Prometheus which is set in broad daylight.
